1987 GTA - Removing the cat converter

Hi Guys.. I'm a "recovering Ford man", and after 3 Mustangs, I've picked up my next new project. 1987 GTA L98. Runs great and what a car. But, my mechanic told me that the cat is totally blocked off and rattling around. So, since it is emissions exempt now in CT, I would like to (for argument's sake), remove the old single cat, and weld in a straight pipe. Question, doing so, will it cause check engine lights? I presume the car has 1 O2 sensor pre cat? Or maybe more,... I'm just not familiar enough to know. Can someone enlighten me as to what issues I might see, if any by removing that old brick sized cat converter and going straight through? Also, how many O2 sensors are there and where are they located on the L98 350 motor/stock exhaust. I'd appreciate some feedback from those that have does this already. Thank you.

Martin

wont affect it, just need to weld the small pipe you see there back onto the pipe you replace your cat with, that little pipe is what feeds the EGR Valve.

The "little pipe" is air injection and does not need to be plugged or connected.

One could remove their cat(s) on an OBDI car without any codes

The little pipe needs clamped up to keep it from flopping around.
You can also unplug the electrical connector for the air pump diverter valve so it wont shoot air thru that pipe if it makes you feel warm and fuzzy.
