Re: driveshaft question

I'm going to guess aluminum...

Easiest way to check is have a look underneath your car and then look at the driveshaft. If it's silvery grey covered in black crap, usually oil etc. then it's aluminum.

If it's browny-black, its steel. Its real easy to tell the difference. If its caked with road grime, you can scratch a little bit off with your fingernail and see the colour underneath. A lot of GTAs and trans ams shipped with either drive shaft style.

Re: driveshaft question

Check your RPO codes in your center console. That will tell you whether you have steel or aluminum.

Not on my '90 TA it won't.

For years I thought I had the steel drive shaft. It wasn't until i checked the Comprime VIN decoder that I found out my car was one of 1,994 1990 Firebirds that came with the JG1 Aluminum Prop Shaft.

There is no RPO code or mention of the aluminum drive shaft on the sticker under the console lid or on the car's original window sticker but my car came with one from the factory. Maybe it was tied to the L98 engine that year.

My 91 has it listed that I have an alum. driveshaft on the RPO sticker in the rear locking compartment in the trunk, so I assumed all the years would list it on the RPO sticker.

Re: driveshaft question

Would not a magnet test answer the question?
