I live in a rural area and on a gravel road; I don't drive very fast on it... 10 mph or less.... but the car does move around some even at slow speeds. No huge holes or bumps, but you know how "washboardy" gravel roads can sometimes be.
Frankie, yes, my '88 Trans AM T-Top car does not have the crack, never been repaired, and it has the highest mileage so I would imagine it had plenty of miles to develop the crack. That's why I wondered about the T-top comment. All of my Notchbacks, which are hardtops, do have that crack. I do recall, like you, one of them has it on both sides.

As well, I thought the T-top car had more reinforcement? I do know they have a small metal wedge on the door and door frame, which come in contact when the doors are closed, and supposedly helps reinforce the structure to minimize body flexing. My T-top (factory) Trans AMs has those parts, while my hard tops don't.

Re: 1988 GTA Notchback

I guess I'll start a new thread when I begin to document the resto job.

We were talking about those at a show recently when my friend noticed my hardtop 89 TTA had them while his hardtop 87 Trans Am didnt.

Re: 1988 GTA Notchback

Steve,
Did the car have them before, or after, you bought the car?
Mine never got them (knock on wood).

Re: 1988 GTA Notchback

George if your talking about cracks then yes both my hardtops have minor ones that were there when I got bought them. You know how I baby my cars The cloth car on both sides and the leather one on the drivers side, not bad enough to bother me plus I've heard they come back after fixing them. From my experience t-top cars generally dont crack

But I was talking about the little metal wedges on the doors, t-top cars got them and most hardtop cars didnt but my hardtops have them. I wonder if they started using them in 1989?

Good question. Or maybe the TTA got them due to the engine? My 1992 T/A convert has them, but of course those cars started out as a T-top, too.

Re: 1988 GTA Notchback

I really don't know.
I see them on my car, but I never really looked at other cars to see if they have them.
Too busy gabbing with everyone at the shows.

Re: 1988 GTA Notchback

It has been a very long time since I last posted anything about my notch. Well not much has been done, its still in the same condition it was in 2 years ago. Life just gets in the way sometimes. We've moved houses, new careers, had another child, etc, etc. However I am happy to report that next weekend the notch will be put in my garage along side my other GTA and, fingers crossed, I will finally start to get to pick and poke at it. I'd like to strip it down to get a better idea of what I have ahead of me. I'll post some new pics next weekend, although they wont be much different then the old ones! lol
