Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

You read right.... the garage down the street from me has a 5.0L TPI (89+) siting on the ground in the parking lot. It is missing accessories, ignition and the plenum (amongst other things I am sure). My assumption is that it's seized, or has a bad knock. I'm going to call the garage tomorrow and see if it was a stick car or not, if so, I may pick it up for the cam and heads, and other spareTPI parts.

Here's my question. If I get these 5.0L heads machines to accept bigger valves, and some porting, the stock injectors with my AFPR should be suffice, right? Also, I'm sure I've read somewhere that the manual 5.0L had a beefier cam than the 5.7L Auto, right?

If anything... I'll get the engine for the intake so I can play around, the runners are a little beat up, but I can fix them and polish them, maybe make some money.

Next question is totally separate... which Vortec heads are the best? And what do I have to do to use them? I see there are no EGR passages built in the heads, so I assume the EGR on those engines are remotely mounted like the 3.1's, 3.4's, 3.8's etc etc. I don't care about the EGR, but there are NO middle intake bolts on Vortec heads... now that seems to be a problem, no? Give me your input please...

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

From my understanding the L98 cam and the 5-speed cars had the same cam and heads.

question 1: yes they'd work, i'd go with a set of 22# 350 injectors though, just to be on the safe side.

question 2: I believe the different cams were dependent on year of the car, not manual or auto.

question 3: fastburn heads are the best vortec head i know of. They are built for 350's though, and the valves probably wouldn't work if you plan to use them on a 305 motor. Yes you would have to plumb a remote EGR if you need EGR. You'd need a vortec intake base to use the stock LTR setup. Scroggin dickey makes one.

5.0 heads will definitely bump up your compression on a 350

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

i would look into the flow numbers of the 305 head, you might be better off with the stock head, as a matter of fact, you will be better off with the heads you already have. the bump in compression will not offset the restriction of flow.

i think he was asking about the casting number for the factory installed vortec heads, as in which casting is better. there is no differance between the heads, with the exception that one was cast in mexico, and one in the US.

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

Watch the compression bump. Running higher than 10:1 compression with iron heads is a bit risky. Even with fuel injection. The L98 Corvette aluminum heads have the same size combustion chamber as the 305 heads which would probably put you in the 10:1 to 10.5:1 range.

if you're only doing a head upgrade, i'd say yes.

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

You also might wanna watch the valve size you run. In some cases putting a larger valve in can actually do more harm than good.HTH

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

Hate to say this but sounds like a waste of time for little gain if any, if you want cheap power go with the vortec with a TPI vortec base.

Re: Discovered an abondoned 5.0L TPI

^i agree, but adding a set of aftermarket heads only will make a bigger increase per dollar. vortec route is cool though...

Listen, if you really want some nice power gains from GM heads, if you can grab a set of corvette aluminum 113 heads for a cheap price, they are well worth rebuilding as they already come with a 58cc chamber and are awesome when ported.

Also try swap meets. You can find some nice used aluminum GM and aftermarket heads there for really good prices.
