Talking Just bought GTA convertible today 15 OCT 10....from the junkyard

I just went to junkyard to get some parts for a TA...wiring, interior trim and other usable parts and low and behold what's in the corner kind of hidden...a 1988 GTA ASC convertible. I had do a double take. I first noticed the top (TAN) then the GTA Diamond spoke rims with all four WS6 center caps, It even still had the stock radio...and get this, it's been at this junkyard for 6 years (poor car). I inquired about the car and spoke to the owner of the yard, he said "the firebird" obivously not knowing what a GTA was. I asked If I could by the whole car, He said "yes". I called my friend with a tow truck and it now sits in my driveway. It's white with a tan top and tan cloth interior. It's a 305 TPI/auto. I couldn't get my camera to download pictures for some reason, I will as soon as I can though.
I'm pretty happy...and just think I was kinda kickin it around on whether or not to go to the junkyard today.

Re: Just bought GTA convertible today 15 OCT 10....from the junkyard

The thing about this junkyard it's so far from my home that I don't like to go, but the other thing is the 3 junkyards that were all next to each other are all closed and out of business due to higher taxes and the economy. So now it's like my choices are limited...really limited. Unless I go to wisconsin. The cars all always rusty up there.

I recently bought/sold a 88 GTA Notchback I found in Wisconsin, all original 350/Digital ran good but very rusty.

The GTA vert I picked up in junkyard still had the SPI sticker in console too...and yes it's a real GTA(Y84).
That's one thing I've noticed on this site, alot of guys are so worried about the car being a real GTA.
I'm just happy to have a TA. If you're concern is to have a real GTA I suggest buying one from an original owner or someone who's had the car and cared for it for a longtime.
I don't think I'd buy any GTA off EBay or far away unless it was researched, and usually on Ebay you don't have that luxury.

Just in case your wondering I removed the rear wing and side pieces when I went to go get money so no one would remove them....or like always in a junkyard, break them. That's why the top is bent upward on the left side. Some ass trying prying it open.

The only reason I would take on a project this big is because it's a GTA convertible. If were a T TOP or HARDTOP I would have parted it.

The only other part it's missing beside the GTA emblems and headlight assembly is the third brake light housing. That was gone when I saw car. I probably will eliminate the third brake light because those are impossible to find. I've seen just the lens go for hundreds of dollars on Ebay.

If anyone has a spare or knows where I can find one please let me know.

Re: Just bought GTA convertible today 15 OCT 10....from the junkyard

I just replaced VATS ignition, one wire was broken off (usual problem). I didn't take pics of that though. I replaced door and trunk locks too.
Installed missing passenger side headlight assembly
I also have the radio working, antenna works (cleaned & lubed).

tomorrow I plan on replacing hood struts and removing woodgrain pieces
replacing cracked dash pad...

Might replace bumper cover (cracked) and replace tail lights & center (cracked)

Well still has woodgrain dash. Spent all day trying to fit a 1992 convertible top and frame on 88...didnt work. I figured out VATS code and after 6 yrs (and some fresh gas & 98 octane boost) it fired right over. It's smokes alot though...I didn't expect much or for it too even start. Woodgrain dash goes tomorrow...

Oh and I put it in gear and it didn't move

Re: Just bought GTA convertible today 15 OCT 10....from the junkyard

I'am kind of amazed it was sitting there for 6 years and looks like not to much was missing.

So what are your plans for the thing? Do you plan to do a full restore on it cause she looks like she is going to need a lot of work but would be nice to see something like this come back from the dead.
