Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
you might get some useful info here:
http://www.compnine.com/vid.php and of course the other third gen sites have sections that address Firebird production numbers. |
Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
Compnine would be the quickest but I don't think goes back to 87.

Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
Found this info here under FAQs, your car may have been to Canada and Back ? Did you do a carfax / Title search -
Does the Vin have a #8 on the 8th digit ? or an F ? Question #8 - "Could you get a 350 TPI GTA with T-tops?" Yes, and No. Initially for 1987, only 5.0L U.S.-bound GTAs could have T-tops installed; they were not, according to the order sheets, available in any Firebird model with a 5.7L engine. Again, this was a weight issue dealing with the CAFE ratings. GTAs destined for Canadian delivery in 1987 were not bound by the same requirements, and were available with the 5.7L engine and T-tops. According to Pontiac order sheets and production records, the only GTAs subsequently available with both the 350 TPI engine and the T-top option were the 1989 model cars; the GTA that year enjoyed a large build number with both options. Starting in 1990, all 350 TPI GTAs were available as hardtops only. I have seen evidence of a few 1991 5.7L GTAs built with the hatch roofs, but that is only single-digit production. |
Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
So 89' was the only year you could get a GTA with a 350 and T-tops?? I always thought 89-up GTA'S you could get with 350's and T-tops guess maybe i'm wrong????

Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
In the US, only in 89. Canada had them with no restrictions, as said it was a weight thing.
Fortunately - I have the 89 with the L98 and T tops - it's nice. Funny that a convertible weighs more than a t top or a HT - you'd thing it was lighter. Think it has to do with the glass hatch vs the steel trunk. |
Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
I've talked with a local guy about his 89' 5.7 t-top car and now realize why he was so high on his price with the car needing paint and interior work.

Re: L98 canadian production numbers with t-tops
So not to bring a topic up from the dead.... but..
A buddy is looking at buying a GTA and asked me about some details. He found 2, both 1990 T-top cars. Now both claim 5.7 engines. The one owner says his is 1 of 160ish that were made with T-tops and 350. His does also have an 8 in the VIN he supplied. The other my buddy has asked for the VIN. So has anybody heard there were a number of '90 350 cars with T-tops??? |

Yea, saw that thread and actually replied to it few months ago, I'm a member there too. I asked the question over there as well. Just looking to see if anyone ever came across a '90 with this combo. They have the VIN's to help the case... but still wondering as it goes against what most of us have figured for years.
