It can be leather or rubber, it doesn't matter. I do not care about the condition of the handle itself but I am looking for one with a mint shifter button cap. It needs to be a shiny black with no marks, nicks, fading, etc. The cap is missing on my yellow GTA and its common for them to pop off. Here is a pic of my 91 GTA shift handle with a shiny cap:
