I've never been a big fan of Ford products. No to offend anyone (I owned a Mustang once) but I don't like their engineering and the handling on the cars is also lacking in my opinion. I won't even go near MoPar products (again no offence).

But two things that I credit Ford for - 1) they seem to listen to the customer - I mean, look at the Mustang revival and can you spell GT40, 2) they did an internal restructure a couple of years back, so guess who didn't ask for a buy-out.

In terms of the "retro" pony cars, I rank the Camaro third, the Challenger 2nd and the Mustang 1st. Kind of sums it up for me. As I tell my students, if you want to be successful, study, study, study.

The bottom line is GM has never listened, nor will they ever listen to the customer.

Saturn could be sold, but not Pontiac.
I wonder why?
Why would GM not try to sell Pontiac, unless someone wouldn't let them.
They didn't even try.

The reason why Saturn could be sold was because it was a stand alone dealer network.

When Penske was in negotiations to buy Saturn, he was buying the dealer network, not the product. The agreement was that GM would provide him with Saturn cars for approximately 18 months. After that, Penske would use the dealer network to sell foreign sourced cars (reportedly Renaults or a Chinese brand) badged as Saturns.

Pontiac was not a stand alone brand as most of the dealers sell other GM brands and the cars are produced in the same factories that build other GM products built on the same platform.

Saab and Hummer are built in their own factories that's why they could be sold too.

I supposed they could sell the Pontiac brand but how incensed would you be if the Pontiac name was sold and the cars were nothing more than rebadged Chinese appliances?

For these reasons,Saturn, Saab and Hummer could be sold but Pontiac could not. In the end, they couldnt even sell Saturn so, even if they wanted to sell Pontiac, the prospects for finding a buyer have to be considered slim at best.

At least this way, GM can keep the name and maybe bring it back someday when the company stabilizes.

My sources tell me that Pontiac had to go away for GM to get the government bailout.

Period.

Pontiac and its products did not go with the new "green" image that the current administration wants for GM to have.

Well, I prefer to look on the bright side, and do some wishful(very wishful) thinking, and hope that GM brings them back after 2012.

Very well said, Frankie.

GM, in my opinion, killed themselves when the killed the Bird. Most powerful in its last year of production...and now everyone wants them. I said when "he" got in office that we were going to live in an "obamanation". Boy was I right.
