i was curious what engine came standard in 1989 regular trans Am? i know the l98 did for us but what about the regular t/a

Can't find my '89 version but the '90 Edmunds new car price guide show the LB9 5.0 L MPFI V8 as standard for the TransAm with the
B2L/L98 5.7L as a $255/$300 option.

Almost certainly. I've tried to figure out how many of the '90 TAs came with the 5.7 L but it seems the best we can do is make an educated guess.

From the info I was given by Pontiac Assistance in February 1992 1,491 of the total 20,523 Firebirds/Formulas/TAs/GTAs came with the 5.7L. That's 7.3% of total 1990 Firebird line production.

10.3% of total production got the LB9 MPFI 5.0 L.
21.7% of total got the L03 TBFI 5.0 L.
The other 60.7% got the 3.1 L engine.

595 of the 1,491 5.7L engines went into GTAs. (~40% of the '90 GTAs came with the 5.7L engine).

That leaves 896 5.7 L engines that went into either Formulas or TransAms.

ASSUMING (and this is a big assumption) those 896 engines were evenly distributed among Formulas and TransAms, then there is about a 15.2% chance that any given 1990 Formula or TA came with the 5.7L engine. The actual distribution between Formula and TA may have been a lot different.

As far as 1989 production goes, I suspect the percentages would be similar to those given above.

my 88 t/a had all the same options as a GTA, minus VATs and the emblem package. That included the 5.7, the seats, etc...

The LO3 5.0L TBI V8 was the standard engine for the Trans Am in 1989.

Mine was. Said it was 1 of 2 but it also said i have the aluminum driveshaft

and that code isn't shown on my console lid sticker. So either the VIN decoder is wrong or the aluminum shaft comes standard with other performance options. otherwise it looks accurate.

can't find my vin, and any explosiondiagrams that show up are for the LS1 engines.

My car is really common, why does this indicate that it's rare?
If you parked your car next to one of the hundreds or thousands of similar cars in our database you probably couldn't tell them apart, but that doesn't mean they aren't different.

For example, some may have an RPO listing for the plant in which they were built. If yours was one of only a few that came out of that plant with a given list of options, it would come back as rare. Another car may have all the same options but was built at a different facility and thusly it's considered different.

decodethis.com , put my vin number in and it showed up and said the car was MSRP 20,399.00...im still saving up money to get invoice and widow sticker, but this tells me that it looks like myn is a GTA , considering regular t/a was 16,000 MSRP ( what this site says anyway) I know that the vin always comes up saying trans am/GTA..but this told me GTA more than just once.. try it and see u guys get the same MSRP..

Is that MSRP base price or including options? My '90 TA had a MSRP of $19,647 (including options) so $20,399 seems low for a GTA if options are included. Anyhow - good luck!

this site is dumb, it says that all 1989 GTA's were MSRP at 20,399, so does this mean this site is probably completely wrong with my vin, i would think so

possibly true 90 L98 trans am, u said ur trans am was 19,000 with options..did ur t/a have alot of options like the GTA?? If 20,399 was base without options im sure it was alot more with options...my car has the t-tops, dual exaust, L98 5.7, Steering wheel controls, Leather interior, all original badges(in not to good of shape) And all gold pontiac lettering with gold firebird in back tailights... it sounds like ur t/a was loaded with options

As far as I can tell my TA had most of (if not all) the performance options a "regular" GTA had. This VIN decoder says I have the aluminum driveshaft which I will need to physically check since that isn't listed on the console lid option sticker or on the window sticker.

It has the manually adjustable cloth seats, fixed mast antenna, decals instead of the GTA emblems, fender vents, etc.. Similar new GTAs were ~$3,500 more at the time (Jan 1990) and if I had been prepared to spend low to mid $20K range back then I would have taken the plunge and paid even more for one of the three brand new TTAs still sitting in two local dealerships (including one hardtop!!!). So I ended up paying $18K even for my new TA trucked in from Santa Maria California. I would have considered a Formula with the L98 also as they were even more of a performance bargain.

If I was in the market now for a used 3rd gen I would go after a GTA since the price difference woudn't be as much for these undervalued cars.
