I am nm in the hunt for a set of tires for mostly summer driving not all season. What can you all tell me about what has worked for you. I have been looking at the BFG G force sport, Sumittos, spelling? and Riken Raptors... I have Falkins on the car now and while they have lasted they are hard and slippery.

Kumhos or Fuzions. BFG G-Force are good, but they're $$$.

I use cooper 2XS 245/50R16s
They are OK on dry pavement when the temp is around 15-20C. Anything above that they get real greasy. But man, they stick like a sunuva gun. I can't do a burn out with em!
They are good in the rain but don't floor it otherwise you'll be chasing your tail...

I paid 640, per tire drive out a Discount Tire, with warranty included. For the $$$ and the safety issue, I prefer to pay a little more per tire, not to mention that our cars require at least a V rated tire, which has to do with the braking, more so than how fast you are going to drive. We all know none of us are going to drive 180+ on a daily basis anyway. The softer compound helps far better in braking, and cornering than in other harder compounds with speed ratings that are usually H rated. hth

Well I looked at the BFG G-sports and I like the tread pattern and the price is in budget 100ish. One thing that holds me back, growing up I remember BFGs as being a very soft compound and side wall and didn't last very long. This may have changed and I too have had the Fuzions not a bad tire. I am cheap and want a tire to do everything not gonna happen but I need one that I can do track days with and DD. I have been using Toyo RA1s for track days but the price! 200 a piece and 100 tread wear you get the point.

Avoid the Sumitomos, I had a set and they didn't last 20K. Got hard as a rock, I got 41K out of my original Gatorbacks that came on my car when new. After the Sumitomos I went back to the BFGs I had before and have stayed with them ever since, well worth the price tag.

I use the BFG's on the GTA and both corvettes.... love em! But yes the price is high (worth it IMO). They do really well when dry and a little slick when wet but all in all good tires.

Goodyear Eagle GS-D3. These tires are insane! In the rain they are monsters! I tried to get the back end of my car loose in a parking lot in pouring rain, and I couldn't do it unless I almost floored it going around corners. They look awesome, they are quiet, they are excellent in the dry, amazing in the wet, and they look amazing. I highly recommend them! They are about $170 a tire though, but worth it! I was going to say too, they do get hard when it is cold outside and spin extremely easy. They are ultra high performance SUMMER tires only..

I bought a set of Yokohama ES 100's two years ago and I live them. They stick very well and are pretty quiet. I would never switch to another tire as long as these are available. I think I paid about $120.00 each at Discount Tire.

I have the Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals now. Very sticky and quiet tire for summer. Last tire I had was BFG Gforce KDW - best tire I ever bought for the GTA, but BFG doesn't make that in a stock size for our cars anymore.

I am curious if anyone has tried these? The look inexpensive but have great reviews.. have it in "our" size.
as a side note, if the wheels cant be rotated, how you guys do it? have them un-mounted and remounted in the rotated position?

The only thing about any H rated tire is that the rubber is so hard that they dont get traction that easily, and they do not do well with handling the tq of the motors in our cars. Ask me how I know... ;) :o

Yes, they do. You can order them from Wal-mart for $600/set.

I have the Riken Raptors which are Z Rated Tires and paid lik $140 with tax and balancing, etc.... bought at Discount Tire and they have lasted, its been 2 years now i drive my GTA everyday and with all the burnouts Ive done the back tires have no to little tread wear which to me is amazing!!!!, my front tires are showing some wear now but very little probably due to my high speed cornering lol, and its been over 2yrs since i bought them and our a nice quiet tire! I will stay with these Raptors i really like them!!! It all comes down to what u like and how much cash ur willing to dish out!!! I would love to try the Goodyear Eagle GTs Z rated tires but at almost $400 a tire thats just way off my budget!!!!

I just bought a set of BFGoodrich g-force sport a/s from Tire Rack for $492 shipped, putting them on the '98 (same size tire) since it's my DD now, the local Free Service tire wanted over $650 for the same tires mounted before taxes. The GTA has Khumo Ecstas on it and they are pretty good as well.
I was looking at the Wide Ovals, but being a summer only tire I didn't want to take the chance, same as the g-force sport (non all season tire) that right now are $98 a piece on Tire Rack, the all season I got for 108 a piece.
The BFGs are ZR speed rated with a 400 treadware on them.

Thanks for the info, I hate to buy a set of tires and regret the purchase for me anyway its not a cheap investment right now. I saw where Summit has the Raptors for for a pretty good price and tire rack has the BFG G sport on sale. I think I have narrowed it down to these two tires. Just don't know that much about the Raptors.

How'd you get those??? And in the stock 245/50R16? Everywhere I looked, that size showed as discontinued...
I was out the door with the WideOvals for $700
DOH!
Don't get me wrong. I like the WideOvals. But would have liked the KDWs given previous experience.

I'm convinced that I'll buy my tires from Tire Rack from now on. I got my BFGs in and they are not blems, but top notch tires.
And as for the Wide Ovals, they have them for $118 a piece, I looked at them as well as the normal G-force Sports but if our winter is like the summer we had with all the rain, we'll have a bunch of snow.

I ended up not getting them, but Wal-mart does still have them. I ended up putting Kumhos on mine. They drone a little, but the radio drowns them out easily and the handling is worth it. She doesn't skate out from under me in wet weather on the off-chance I'm caught in a freak storm.

I run Fuzion ZRi radials on my car. I like them. They're not real expensive, they hold well in the summer, and don't too bad in the rain either (when I drove my car in the rain).
