It is complicated to find a replacement, and a replacement that is not expensive. You can find a cheap one that is not motorized, just fixed position. We really had to work hard to mount the new one that we purchased from GM because the new ones now fit many years of Pontiac. My best advice to you is finding one at a wrecking yard and if it does not work, purchase the rebuilding kit for it. Because the biggest trouble you will find is just finding one that will fit and mount to the fender inside. Not easy if it is not a GM one. Almost impossible for an after market one. It was a big headache for us when we replaced my GTA antenna with a new GM one. Some things I never want to do again, changing my GTA electric antenna is one of them. Yumiko

When I had to replace mine in my 20th TTA along time ago, the rebuild kits were discontinued. Are they availible now?
Also, when I bought the new NOS one, the part number was superseaded by a new part number.
I bought it, and when I had to replace it, it wasn't a big deal.
All I had to do though, was splice a few wires to get everything to work right.
Only problem that I had, was getting the front of my car high enough, as mine was stuck in the "up" position.
You have to take them out from the bottom.
I didn't want to break my original, in case I find a NOS rebuild kit.
I still have my original.

what was so hard about mounting it to the inside of the fender?

The problems that I remember we were having was the new antenna has its own set of black plastic pieces that fit around the antenna part that comes through the fender. About five or six different angled ones come with the new antenna, you chose the one that works on the angle of the GTA fender the best. The problem is, they are not a good fit and there is a space between the fender ridge and the plastic piece. You cannot use the factory original one because the new antenna tube is different.
The other problem is, the new antenna needs to mount to the original bracket. This bracket mounts between the antenna motor and the fender. The new antenna is not the exact same shape as the original one, so you have to work hard to get everything to adjust correctly. Also I think the cable to plug the antenna into the stereo is a little bit different also. I am not talking about the electrical cables, I am talking about the one where it goes to the stereo and the radio signals go through it.
To solve all of these little problems, we removed the new antenna tube and just put on the original factory antenna tube. Everything worked then, because the bracket mounts to the tube, the radio cable plugs into this tube, and the tube fits the fender at the top with the original outter pieces.
I would not recommend anyone to do what we did, but we were good at it took our time and were able to accomplish this. Yumiko

I would not be able to answer your question because I have never rebuilt one before. I would have to say that if the metal mast or plastic part that moves the metal mast up and down on yours is broken, then this kit should fix it.
One thing I forgot to mention about the original power antenna and the replacement one at GM now. The original antenna water can go inside when the antenna is down, because when it is down all the way, you can look down and see the point of the antenna down in the hole. The replacement GM ones now, it has sort of a cap at the top so when the antenna goes down, it completely covers the hole so no water can go inside. Yumiko

yeah, if you fix the cable, the motor will run only when it goes up and down. my dads caprice did the same thing..
