I went to the GM dealer and they won't fix the seatbelts because my VIN does not show up as being part of that (recall)campaign or something like that. I called the National Highway Saftey comm. and they said since the recall is more thatn 10 yrs there was nothing they could do.
I ordered the repair kit for the GTA ($5.95 us) My question is since there is no intructions that come with it and I have been told that there is a special tool that is needed to do the repair. where can I get info on doing the reapair myself? I cant seem to find any instructions anywhere...any Ideas???? thanks

GM has the special tool.
It took me 7 months to get my local dealership to get off their high horse and do the seatbelt fix for me.

well I had made the appt. and then when I brought it in for the repair the counter guy said that either it had been done already or the car was not part of the campaign so I guess I have no recourse but to do it myself. but was wondering if there were any instructions out there anywhere?

haven't got a clue.
Have your belt buttons turned pinkish in colour and can you scratch them easily with your fingernail?
If so...
because ALL f-bodies of the affected years were subject to the recall, and when the recall is done, they are entered into their systems as being completed.
Its kinda weird, it took me a long time to get things going on my own. Give your stealership another call and ask if they can provide you with the instructions on how to do this. They should have that archived somewhere.

I live about 30 miles from another Dealership (Medford Oregon) that I called and they said the same thing that either the recall had been done or it was not part of the campaign. I gave them my VIN# so two different dealerships said the same thing so maybe it had been done and one came apart inside. and I have to fix it myself, the buttons don't really look pinkish or oxidized.

is there metal clips installed on the edges where they buttons are?
If so, then it has been done at some point, if you can scratch the buttons easily with your finger nail they need replacing.
I dont know if they can provide you with instructions on how to, but they have to be somewhere within GM's archives...

I picked up the repair kit today, I think maybe the recall had been done and it came apart sometime later... the metal clip I found on the floor under the seat

Well I put the new button and spring in and the seatbelt still does not work I think it may be another factor. I guess off to the wrecking yard to get a reciever but I cant seem to find a gray one right now. and it looks like the recall had not been done on the other belts

Here you go:

Takes 10 min to do all 4 seat belts ... no need for a special tool you can use a small flat screwdriver to pry out the old red button and at the same time use a flat table knife pushed down behind the button to support it from tilting and that is it ...

Wow, it has been that long ago "1991" since they issued that recall? It just seems like yesterday when I received my notice in my mail about the seat belt recall. Let me ask you, that document attached says it is Chevrolet Camaro. But our cars are Pontiac. If there is a difference would then the instructions be different on how to repair it or the numbers that are affected on the listing?
Anyways, I never got this repair done to my GTA because the instruction that I received in my mail says to only bring it to get fixed if the red part is damaged. The red part on my seat belts was not damaged. Even now that part is not damaged on my seat belts. My GTA has been stored inside for ten years now and before that I would keep it in the shade. So the sun and heat is probably the thing that causes this to happen. Yumiko

Mine turned pink and I could scratch them even after the recall was done.

Thanks for all your input, I decided to work with the seatbelt some more. I took it back apart and I held it upside down and pushed in the reciever quickly, with a small screwdriver about 30 times and a piece of the red button came out (I thought I had gotten all the debris out) put it back together and now it WORKS!!! It would not latch since there was still a small piece of the red button inside. Now I don't have to look for one. ONE MORE QUESTION,,, I think someone switched around the front belts there is one longer than the other__Which side does the longer belt (receiver) go on Thanks
