Im looking for an install kit that will mount the stereo as close to flush with the face of the console as possible. I understand that there is a support bracket in the back of the console (on T/A's) that I will need to remove to make this work. I've installed a bunch of stereo's in cars before, but I always used the off the shelf stuff and the radios stuck out an inch from whatever they mounted to. For this car (my GTA) the stereo sticking out is unacceptable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

After doing some google-ing, I came up with this http://www.installer.com/item/display_item.php?it=99-4700
It says it only works on the '82-'87 trans ams, wonder why that is... Ebay has the same kit too. I might give it a shot if nobody has any other ideas. I really need to get the factory radio out of there, and get my satellite radio in, Im growing seriously tired of the seek button LOL.
one more thing, does a standard wiring harness (for a firebird-T/A) work with the factory sub? or is there a special harness? or Im SOL and the factory sub wont work with a aftermarket radio?

I was told the same thing ... that you can't get a flush look on our models but I don't really see why it would be different. On my '86 T/A the radio pod seemed exactly the same as my '88 GTA. My '86 also had the factory sub and an aftermarket Kenwood worked the sub just fine... but it did sound like crap. The Kenwood also stuck out but I never really tried to make it flush. You can also go with the 1 1/2 din Pioneer radio which is nice and mounts flush but I think that you have to hook up satellite seperately. I know the Pioneer will also work with an Ipod. Take a pic once you figure your set up out. I would like to see what you come up with.

Main reason for them sticking out, the aftermarket radios are longer than the stock ones, therefore to keep from it hitting the tranny hump, and giving enough room for wiring it has to be brought out to where the back is about where the stock unit would usually sit.

I also desired a flush appearance with my head unit and went this route. I pulled the entire pod unit out of the car and carefully removed the rear from the pod. I then used two pieces of radio backstrap (the metal strips included in some radios) to stiffen things back up. This gives all the romm in the world to install pretty much any head unit out there flush. At one point I had the radio set up to have the face recessed into the dash kit. I had to replace the radio and went back to a more traditional setup with the face flat against the dash kit. Simply put, the radio's face is the only thing that sticks out past the trim plate. As for the wiring question, mine's all custom so I can't help you there.

This is the 1 1/2 din Pioneer in my GTA:

It is designed to fit in the compartment like factory because it is not as deep as a single din radio. It also has a remote which allows you to use it with the PAC SWIX Steering Wheel Adapter for your steering wheel controls.

Man, that's a pretty clean install for a single DIN unit. That looks great. I had one of those 1-1/2 DIN Pioneers in my Notchback GTA for a while, but never could get the PAC adapter to work the remote radio controls correctly.... so I jettisoned the entire setup.
But I really liked the stereo unit itself a lot. It had a good sound.... if I ever had a GTA without the wheel controls, I'd go back to that Pioneer unit in a second.

I just think it looks way cleaner then the HU sticking out an inch. I did have to cut out the raised section of the back of the console, but will worth it in the end IMO. I brought it back to the top because Louvers wanted to see.

That is pretty nice but this is the stereo that I'd like to put in...plus it is satelite ready as well and has everything that my current CD player has except the ability to play my cassette tapes. With this one I can do both. :D

I too will be pulling the factory cassette player out in favor of a aftermarket CD. What is the general consensus on the factory subwoofer? Are there two different harnesses depending on whether you have the subwoofer? Do I wire it in and just leave it off since someone here said it sounded like crap anyway?
While we are on the subject, if you have the subwoofer, is there a two-way and a seperate sub behind the panel or is it one speaker? Mine sounds fine until i turn the sub on and then it vibrates violently so the sub (or the speaker if its a 3-way ) is blown.

I had no problem installing a DIN standard (pioneer if I remeber correct) in my TA. Fabricated an aluminium frame and fit the radio unit in that one and cut the plastic support bracket in the back of the radio pod and there's plenty of space. Looked great.
