Unless you have a alot of mods, like cam, heads, intake, exhaust, and so on then there is no real reason to get one. Save your $$$$ get all of your mods done and then do a custom chip. You will be glad you did.hth

I have the full Hypertech setup in both my GTAs but not for the performance benefits; I did it to help my cars run cooler on the road and in traffic. I have the chip, the thermostat, and the fan switches on both cars.
I suppose that a cooler running engine has more power than a hot one, but that's not the reason I swapped mine. So far they have worked beautifully with no problems whatsoever.
For performance applications, Cliff has the best advice above.... wait until everything's done and then get the custom chip to match your modifications to your car.... and then it's VROOM time!

I got a custom chip from fastchip.com. I had mods done to the car and figured it would be a good idea to do this so the ECM wouldn't think the car was running stock still. It was pretty cool, they have an order form that asks all the specifications of your car and then they program that new info right to the chip after you fax it to them.

unless the only mods you have done are exhaust, air filter, and lower temp fan switch... the hypertech and jet chips are crap. they are only really setup to work with those mods.

Heres what the hypertech chip claims:
The Street Runner(tm) also raises RPM for torque converter lock-up, producing better driveability and smoother shifting.
HP & Torque For Hypertech Street Runner Power Chip:
10-15 HP/20 ft lbs Torque

Hmmmm, naaa, I dont think so. To many people have ran them and had very poor results. The only thing thet do is move up your timin a little, bump up the fuel curve and some delay tq lock up until you get to 4th gear.
Like I said before do what you like but you can more hp and tq with that same amount of $$ from other bolt ons beside that.

when they say raises RPM, do they mean changing to a higher idle? Especially since our older auto. trannys don't have electronic shift like the newer cars. The reason I ask is that my wife's GTA with a 5-spd trans. and a hypertech chip has an idle problem. It idles fine after you fist start it cold, then as soon as you start driving, the idle increases to about 1500 RPM. I wonder if the hypertech chip is causing this. If so, then I'll be swapping in a stock chip ASAP. :bs:
Any thoughts?

is the hyperjunk chip in there for a manual car? the manual and auto cars have a difference between them i think. the RPM that is talked about is for the lockup of the torque converter. it just doesn't allow the TC to lock up until a higher RPM, giving you better performance.

The hypertech chip i quoted that from is for a 91 GTA with 350tpi/Auto tranny.
Like what munson was saying the chip wont allow the tc to lock up until a higher RPM giving you a better take off.

Off-the-shelf(Hypertech, etc.)=a waste
Do your mechanical mods, custom burn a chip for YOUR mods, and you'll be 10 times happier
I've played the off-the-shelf game before...wasted my money.
Start with CAI, exhaust (headers, hi-flow cat, performance muffler). Move to 1.6 roller rockers, ported plenum/base and siamese runners or a short ram intake. MAYBE then, you'll be ready for a chip. But you can still do a cam, Vortec heads, larget TB...the list goes on and on.
Bottom line? Mechanical mods before computer mods.

i wouldn't totally agree with that. when i first got my car it had the stock chip, 24# lt1 injectors, zz4 cam, headers, flowmaster exhaust. the car ran alright, but never anything better then that. that's when i found lsracingchips and had them tune my car, it woke the car right up. after that my car ran top notch.

Why not? Your just backing my point up. Perform your mechanical mods, then havea custom chip burned to your specific mods.
If you swapped in a chip, on a stock engine, you'd be disappointed by the results. Not to mention, if you did te mechanical mods, you'd hafta redo the chip.

yeah but i only had minor mods done. if you go and do a heads/cam/intake swap without burning a chip right then and there, you'd be lucky to get your car started.

Here's a question then...
Since I have recently done some induction upgrades on my car will I need a new chip in order to make my car run?
Mods include...
Edelbrock High-Flow Aluminum intake
SLP Runners
SLP Airfoil
Accell 26# Injectors
K&N Air Filter
Not to forget my previous mods...
Shortie headers
No cats
3-inch Flowmaster American Thunder Exhaust

I wouldnt think so. Now if you had done a cam and head swap then yes. But, with the mods you have done, I wouldnt think so. Oh and btw, I know of a lot of cars runnin the ZZ4 and alum heads as well as your mods and still just on a factory chip but runnin in the 12's

That's good to know. I might have one burned just to be on the safe side. I don't think it would hurt...might actually improve. What do you think?
BTW...car is running. Just need to go back and reset the timing to smooth it out some, but the car left my buddies house last night under its own power! :D We did run into a couple of other issues though. The brake light on my dash is on now. We did replace the resevoir of the master cylinder because my other one was leaking and replaced a caliper, but that's it. The porportioning valve on it is brand spanking new withing the last six months. I don't know why it's on.
The other issue is oil pressure. I had pretty good pressure the whole time the car sat and idled. I continued to have good pressure during the trip home until I came to a stop and sitting at the light. It bottomed out at zero. Got off the road quickly and shut it down. Still oil in the motor. When I restarted I heard a slight knock coming from the passenger side. It only last a couple seconds then went away.
Thanks for the info. :D

I can tell you this from my own experience. I did all the mods first and then the PROM last. The car ran OK but after this custom PROM went in, it was like night and day. After more than a year of running with mismatch programming I wish I had it done ahead of time. The Hypertech is OK for a stocker with minor mods, but for a modified engine a custom job is the only way to go. and that includes intake swap too which is a must.
On the plus side also, I had Highway Mode enabled to save a little on fuel while cruising, you can't get that on an off-the-shelf PROM.

Hi,
Just a thought, but have you checked the switch/wiring for the switch at the parking brake? Or, perhaps the parking brake isn't fully down.

I hope so...it's supposed to be here by tomorrow since I'm going back out of town again Saturday. It just sucks that I won't really get to drive the car once I get it in. Still have to work out those other little bugs first.
