can i use a two wheel dolly to tow my 91 trans am? I need the front wheels off the ground, and i don't want to spend the money to rent the flat bed trailer. I'm going from West Lafayette to Schererville, IN. Thats about 90 miles total.

You probably could, but there's probably some rule that you can't go over a certain speed because you'd mess up the driveline since it's a rear wheel drive car. But, I dunno. Everytime I needed to tow my GTA, I shelled out for the flat bed. Nothing's too good for my baby.

You can use a car dolly. I've done it a few times myself. Make sure you have it in neutral. Release the parking brake. Don't drive to fast or your transmission might be damaged. I did not make this up, it is right you of the owners manual. I never went faster then 40mph. Hope this helps.

Just a suggestion but the two wheel car dolly could be use on the back tires and the front can be locked straight by the steering column lock I'd use a steering wheel lock bar as a safe gaurd. The only thing is to make sure your nose don't rub when you go over bumps. The trans pump takes a beating when the tourque converter moves fluid with out the pump in operation but short distamces can be ok. So sez the manual.

If it were me, I'd go for the U-Haul trailer. But then I always have the kind of luck where something would get screwed up....

you can always use the car dolley and take the driveshaft out. thatll just put the wear on the rear end, not the trans too.

Thanks for the sugestions. I have to have the frond end off the ground because the front susspension is screwed up. I forgot about removing the drive shaft. I think i will try that idea.

Good idea, I never thought of that. Also make sure you get a plug for the tranny so you don't lose tranny fluid all over ther place.

removing the driveshaft or getting a full size car hauler from uhaul is the best way to go. If you get the uhaul trailor, be prepared to climb out your window or hatch, the car sits too low. Your doors will hit the wheel wells for the trailor... i know this from experience.

a dealer might have one. Everytime they get a transmission shipped to them it has one in the tail shaft. or go to a transmission shop they prolly have them kicking around.

How about un-bolting the driveshaft from the rear end, then tying it up out of the way with a wire coat hanger? You'd keep the yoke in the tranny that way and not loose any tranny fluid. I still prefer the flat bed trailer solution though. If the front end is messed up, getting it onto a flat bed trailer OR a car dolley will be a pain.

I found out that i can aford a flat bed from uhaul for a one day use...their internet site was quoting me outrageous prices for one way use. i can still drive the car onto a trailer, i just cant drive the car over idle speeds. now i have to convinve my dad to let me use his truck since he is the only one i know that has a hitch, let alone a motor that can handle pulling a 2000lb trailer with a 3500lb car on it. thanks for all the replies. i might just try to look for a plug for the hell of it, you never know when one would be useful.
