Mystery Set of Seatbelts

I had to remove the rear seats in my 89 GTA today and was surprised to find a third set of rear seatbelts. If you look at the attached picture, you will notice that there is a lapbelt set. Also the female part of this mystery seatbelt set is not the standard plastic with the red release button but rather a square metal one with the GM logo on it. It appears as if the car from the factory this way, but I may be wrong. I was wondering what the puropse of this seatbelt set is, and if anyone else has them.

My 1989 does not have these mystery seatbelts.

may have been added for a babyseat or something by a previous owner? that is odd though... makes me want to check my back seat too.

I thinkthat it was an option, not sure though, it may be a factory option for a baby seat.

yeah.. unless you like straddling a metal hump. Thats why I guess a babyseat.

Thant looks like an old style seat belt buckle. As you said, a previous owner might have installed it. Maybe they had one too many kids and this was their only car, who knows. But for a baby seat? I am not sure, I had an 88 Camaro and the baby seat we used to have in the back seat ocupied every bit of space behind the seat. You could not fit it on the hump, it would be way too high and it would not straddle. But you never know, people do weird things.
