My 1988 Monte Carlo SS has a special dealer installed GM Goodwrench vehicle security system which came with the car when new that I am in dire need to learn how to operate and I have heard of someone mention that their '88 GTA had this same particular car alarm. The alarm isn't ran by a transmitter, there is a keypad mounted just below the gauge cluster that has a telephone type touch-face on it. Then wired behind it is a small black box that has a little white knob sticking out the side that you can rotate, possibly used for sensitizing a motion detection sensor. Off to the left there is an on/off toggle switch mounted underneath the steering column and also visible is a large black box back behind/underneath of the dash with what it looks to be like 20 wires going out of it. There is also a speaker mounted under the hood with a power wire going to the battery that is disconnected. The alarm is completely intact and looks to be very usable and pretty expensive for the time.

This alarm came new with the car from a dealership in Indianapolis, IN with the car's total expense being kind of costly for that time. The car is pretty much fully loaded and kind of a uncommon color combination of black/saddle and I don't really want to modify or remove the older system if possible. I have called them (Blossom Chevrolet) a few times since then and it seems that they don't know too much about it and can't direct me anywhere, though one employee at one time did say that alot of Camaros had left there around then with this same type of alarm. I have also called GM (1-800-222-1020) and they can't seem to do much for me either. For another path to try I have checked on-line but can't seem to pull up much. I was kind of hoping that since the end of the RWD Monte Carlos and GTAs kind of fall in the same time period that some of you might have some knowledge on this type of alarm. If you need any additional detail just let me know. Any of your thoughts or input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MonteCar

Monte, my black Notchback had this alarm on it when I got it back in '98; it was a daily driver from the D/FW area. I never tried to get it to work though.... after a couple of drained batteries, I just had it removed. I still have it out in a box on a shelf in my shop.

I don't have any info on it, though. Sorry. If you could find a GM Accessories catalog from those years, it would most likely be listed in there. But it is no doubt too old for you to get any help from GM on it. They'll just want to sell you the more modern version they have now....

I am not so sure if your alarm you talking about is same as my alarm that I got with my car when it was new, but, you are right, these alarms if yours and mine are same was pretty much hight technology in 1987 - 1988. My alarm that I order installed on my GTA from Pontiac did have this key pad mounted inside. But my alarm also had a transmitter button on a key ring. If you have a small plastic box mounted somewhere inside on your windshield, then you will know that it had a remote at one time. I order this alarm with my GTA because it had safety features that I like, lock/unlock door and also if I press button on remote for consecutive two seconds, the alarm would go off. This feature was in case someone I see waiting for me to get to my car that I do not know. I did like this alarm system very much and for that time when it come out, a remote activated lock/unlock was very futuristic/high technology. However, in 1992 I drop my remote inside water and it was very expensive and hard to get replacement. So the next time remote needed to be replace, I just replace entire alarm with new one. So bottom line, just to get part in 1992 was nearly impossible for me. I stongly do not believe it will be easy for you to get your alarm working again if you require new replacement parts now in 2005. Yumiko

Hey guys I found out some info, after searching around I found out that a company from Troy, MI called Code Alarm made the alarms for GM that were discontinued about 4 years ago. I am pretty certain that my system is the VSS-100 which that has the stationary keypad and I called them and they are supposed to send out a owner's manual and installation manual for it. Luckily after messing around with it for about a week and using my DMM to find out what the wires were and what for I about got it figured out and I was able to figure out what the code was as well. If anyone ever gets caught in the same boat that I did you might be able to find the info I needed by contacting them.

Thanks,
