View Full Version : Radio units compatibility

I had recently replaced the factory radio w/cassette deck for a Jensen unit. The factory one had stopped working completely so I had no choice. I recently saw an 89 GTA with a factory radio/CD unit and of course the steering wheel controls. my question is if I could purchase a radio/CD unit, and will it be compatible with the steering wheel controls or the system. I am trying to keep the original looks of the car, but would like to have a CD player. I know I could purchase a new Pioneer or Jensen unit that's 1 1/2 DIN and it will probably sound better, but that is less important to me.
Any suggestions?

try crutchfield, they have tons of parts that they don't list in their catalog, and my buddy got a thingy that hooked his stereo up to his steering wheel controls. they have pretty good prices and excellent shipping times too. if you can't find what you want on their website, email them or call them, because they're really nice and helpful.

Ozzy, the '89 GTAs that had the OEM CD players didn't use the steering wheel controls.... they had the standard steering wheels instead. I don't know about adapting a factory CD player to our car's wheel controls; I have been told by several parties that it will not function properly.
I've got all the info and a direct contact for those PAC adapters.... out in the black GTA. I'm babysitting today, but I'll try and get out there and get that info for you if you're interested.

Thanks Frankie, if you would just post it on this thread so maybe others can use the info too. "tommydodso" was getting some info too.
I guess I might have mixed the cars when I specified the 1989 GTA with steering wheel controls. Either way I am going to have to go with an aftermarket CD/radio unit. I already have one in the car but it's a 1DIN and it doesn't look right, plus I miss the steering wheel controls too.
Thanks,
Ozzy

I still don't have my adapter installed and working correctly yet. Mine was losing the memory every time the key was killed and PAC even sent me a different chip to use in it.... same problem. I guess I have sort of lost interest in the whole project as of late.
As for the UQ7 system, the adapter is in the other GTA.... although I see no reason for it not to work correctly, as the system is powered and wired after the radio plug leaves the back of the radio. You use the same style plugs and adpaters to mate with the factory wiring, so I see no reason the subs should not function just like an OEM radio was in the car.
The UQ7 setup worked just fine when I had the later-model Delco CD player in the red car recently.
