Hello everyone, today I was going through all of my GTA paperwork from the past when I come across mail from GM that I receive in beginning of 1994. I don't know if second, third and more owners of car get this. In this letter, it say that if my seatbelt is not working, GM will replace with new ones for free. Is anyone on this site not familiar with this? The letter say that all Firebirds may have this problem. If you want me to forward letter to you in case your belt not working properly (locking), let me know I have already scanned it into computer and I can e-mail you copies. Yumiko.

The plastic used in the original belt buckles become brittle and can snap apart when the belt is tensioned, such as in an accident. When the plastic snaps apart, the locking latch then has freedom to move thus becomes unbuckled. The "newer" style belt buckles (units that attach near the center console to the floor) have a metal clip that comes from the inside over to the back side. As I remember on my 88, the red portion of the buckle was starting to turn white by the end of year one. The original recall was around February 1991 TSB 90C03A. I sold my GTA in December 1999 and the red portion was still red, so there must have been a difference with the quality of the plastic.

As you can see from my earlier post, I had mine done. THEY WORKED though. It is a complete recall due to poor design.
Could somebody please help me! My seat belts are suffering from the same syndrome as you described. The red is turning white and is beginning to crack. My -87 GTA was shipped from the states back in 1990 and hasn't been affected by the recall. GM Nordic told me to go **** myself becase they have never heard about such a recall and because they didn't sell the car they just dont give a damn. What should I refer to? is there a number refering to the recall???? HELP!?!

You should tell them to go f*** themselves because they have to fix it. I have a paper with some numbers on it that I will get for you. I'm having mine done at Westminster Pontiac, GMC on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks Mike!
Due to the fact that GM Nordic doesnt give a damn about US built cars they do not want to help me. They claim there is no such recall. By the way their knowlege about my car is so good that when I first started talking about this recall they asked me if all 7 belts were affected?? They thought it was a TRANS SPORT!! Yuck.
It would be great if you could help me Mike because I would really like to stomp on their nuts.

The red piece on my buckles is turning white but they still buckle perfectly fine. Do they replace the belt and the buckle? And how do I know if my car has already been serviced for this?

My red buttons were white also as per my thread.. The way you can tell if it HAS been done is look at the buckle assembly (part in the middle of the car). Mine now HAS a metal plate coming out of the slot. They replace that buckle assembly and you will now have a nice-red buckle to look at (nothing is done to the belt itself). If this is confusing, email me and I will send a digital pic of what my buckles look like.
