Automotive replacement parts retailers and performance shops are generally
considered to be separate by most hot rodders. You go to the parts store for the
basic elements of your project, and you stop by your local go-fast shop for the
fun performance equipment. So far so good. But what if you don’t have a
performance shop in your area? Sure, you can mail order your parts, which is a
great way to go. You can save megabucks on parts, but you have to wait for them.
Enter the folks at Performance Corner. They want to change all that by bringing
a performance shop into the corner of your local performance parts retailer.
(Hence the name Performance Corner…. Get it?) To help get the word out on the
store-within-a-store, they’ve commissioned Dave Blankenship of Pro Built Metal
Products to build a street-wise version of Don Prudhomme’s fast, fast funny car.
The street snake is going to be given to some lucky enthusiast who wins in the
drawing at one of the 700 (and growing) Performance Corner outlets across the
country. You don’t have to buy a thing; they just want to get you there to check
out the deals. And they’re offering you the chance to drive home in a brand-new,
tricked-out 1989 Pontiac Trans Am GTA for your time. Not a bad offer at all….
But what about the car?
The Snake was wondering the same thing. After all, it does have his name on it.
Upon hearing that the car was nearly finished, he stopped by the Pro Built shop
to size up the Street Snake. We caught up with Don as Dave Blankenship was
giving him a tour of the Performance Corner “Don Prudhomme” Street Snake GTA."
ADMINISTRATOR'S NOTE: At present, I have been unable to ascertain whether or not this car still exists. As it was a contest giveaway, details are sketchy as to its whereabouts after the end of the contest. I am still trying to research the possible whereabouts and/or condition of this particular car, and I will update this section if any new information comes to light.
